Chapter Sixteen
THURSDAY AFTERNOON
Robbo spent the afternoon sunbathing, swimming, splashing, bombing, and diving to be preciseâand drinking a series of ever stronger alcoholic drinks with the other lads.
By the time he was sipping a large cosmopolitan cocktailâor metropolitan, or something like that, Maya had said when ordering it at the barâRobbo had retired to the dappled shade of a tree in the corner of the garden so he could observe Daniel and Sam from afar. Hopefully without being seen.
It was strange, and a bit creepy observing them and knowing they couldnât see him. âIâve got a bit of a headache. Having a bit of a doze,â heâd said, to the crowd of lads when he had picked up his belongings and deposited himself under the tree.
âYou seem quiet,â Caspian had said, a worried look on his face. âToo much booze?â
âToo much sun.â Robbo brushed away the concern, keen to get away and take up the position he so needed to be in. Heâd spent the hour imagining what Daniel and Sam were talking about, wondering if they had been together, and how that added a certain extra dynamic between gay friends, he didnât have with his male friends. And then heâd started wondering why he was thinking about that so much.
âBecky.â He shrugged to Caspian who simply smiled back. âIt might have been the biggest mistake of my life splitting up from her. Is that possible, do you think?â
âMate, Iâve lost count between you two. You were on, you were off, then you were on again. Alls I care about is you being happy.â
âMe too,â Robbo said wistfully, half to himself, and half to Caspian. âWish I knew the secret.â
With a snort, and a pat of the shoulder, Caspian left.
Robbo collected his belongings and headed to his hiding place by the tree.
Now, having been observingâyes, that was a better word than spying on, Robbo decidedâobserving Daniel and Sam, for nearly an hour, and yet he still had nothing to go by. Still, despite trying to lip read, he couldnât tell at all what they were talking about. He wished heâd done that lip-reading evening class, Becky had suggested a few years ago. He forgot why it had come up, but now, it would have been just the ticket.
They were laughing now. Sam and Daniel were bantering back and forth and laughing loudly. Bloody friends and their bloody jokes.
Robbo glanced back to the pool where the other guests sat in pairs, long tanned limbs curled around other longer less tanned limbs. Hands rubbing sun cream on the backs of others. Drinks passing from one hand to the next. More laughing. It was fucking well like Noah and his arkâbloody animals going on two by two. And heâd gone and thrown his other half over the edge of the ark, like the twat that he was, and now here was he, spying on two gay guys and then returning to his room alone and wanking in the shower, while thinking about something he had no business to be imagining.
